Your life has a purpose!

On being INFECTIOUS…

I was asking my friend today why people care about what I have to say. I was very  interested because, truth be told, I am FATALLY FLAWED in ways I cannot even begin to count – and in many cases, still not willing to share! HA!

I am un-organized, I lack follow-through, I am sometimes extremely selfish and very stingy with my love. I’m pretty sure I am way behind all of you in success. I am a “preacher” and I lack the confidence to be vulnerable. It all keeps me very small.

Yet, there was something she said that hit the mark. She told me that I am INFECTIOUS! I love people. I love them NOW, in the moment. I never say never and I never give up – until it’s time to give up, of course.

INFECTIOIUS … she says. I can see that! I like to light other people’s fires and see them shine. I like to get excited about what I have to say and what you have to say. I like to say “yes” and let the chips fall where they may.

Today, I was on the phone with a company who is going to sign a contract with me. (I sell into Fortune 500 companies, as a rule…to set some context). When they told me that they were ready to move forward, I let out a tiny “yay” and said, “I’m jumping” (and I was – I was jumping in my office). This CRACKED THEM UP and they generously countered with…”as happy as you are, we are 10 times happier…this is going to solve our major problems”. It was a magical moment.

So, I’m literally terrible at many many things. Yet, I am JUST LOVELY at one very important thing. I am INFECTIOUS!

The moral of the story is not that YOU need to be infectious (although, I suspect you are more than you know if you would simply let go from time-to-time). I think the moral of the story is BE WHO YOU REALLY ARE. Show your passion for what you love. The hardest one…BE VULNERABLE. Today, I am VERY grateful for those of you who are engaged in the conversations I am having with you. I have few followers, but you are MIGHTY and interested and wildly INTERESTING.

That’s what matters to me.

Not hundreds of thousands of followers, but people who are really out to accomplish something and provide something even if they can’t see why or how…just ‘cuz they are called to do it. I am in a powerful community and I am grateful for you.

NOW.. Let’s go be INFECTIOUS. Are you in?

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

I know a man who is a WILDLY SUCCESSFUL investment portfolio manager.

He grew his business from nothing to spectacular!

He works with ordinary people with ordinary portfolios, but even through VERY difficult markets he continues to grow and KILL his competition.

How does he do this? He has smart investment strategies, for sure. But, so do a lot of people.

What he does is communicate, communicate, communicate.

When the market has a bad day….he send messages to all of his clients telling them what he’s thinking about and what he’s doing.

When news hits “the street” about what “smart money” is doing, he sends messages to everyone telling them why they are part of the “smart money” crowd.

He sends letters and newsletters and insists on quarterly check-ins.

When he’s bringing money under his management from another broker, he sends messages every step of the way about what is happening.

When someone refers a friend to him, he keeps them in-the-loop about how successful the new relationship is.

One day after a MAJOR MARKET MELTDOWN, he had all of his staff in on a Saturday, calling each and every client to tell them what he was doing about it.

Now, this is NOT easy. It requires systems and it requires thinking.

2% of his clients complain that they hear from him too much.

But, no one leaves. He has the relationship. People KNOW what is happening and they know that someone is hard at work on their goals. I think they would even feel guilty talking to someone ELSE about managing their money — like they are cheating on him.

Be this way. Tell them what you are going to do, tell them what you are doing, tell them what you did. Thank them. Keep them in the loop.

This way of doing business makes you a real and full partner. And you will always win!

Who do you think you are?

People are so quick to put themselves (and others) in a box. To define them. But, what are we to be defined by?

When I look, I see that:

I’ve been a liar, and I’ve told the truth
I’ve been a morning person, and I’ve slept in
I’ve walked, I’ve ridden, I’ve biked, I’ve taken the train
I’ve passed classes, and I’ve failed exams
I’ve loved, and I’ve hated
I’ve been generous, and I’ve been stingy
I’ve been kind, and I’ve been cruel
I’ve been loaded, and I’ve been broke
I’ve been fit, and I’ve needed to lose a few pounds
I’ve had a drink, and I’ve stayed sober
I’ve said yes when I meant “no”, and I’ve said no when I meant “no”
I’ve held on tight, and I’ve let go
I’ve stuck with it, and I’ve quit
It goes on and on like that…

There is no one thing that defines me. I am alive, living, RIGHT NOW, and I am doing what I’m doing RIGHT NOW. And it can be new and different and un-imaginable RIGHT NOW!

When you meet someone WAY more accomplished than you are…

Imagine that this person was sent to you as a REAL LIFE example of: “I can do it, so can you!!!”

I met someone today who I deeply admire and whose accomplishments I wish I had. He has been a huge success in business since he was practically a child. He rocks big and small businesses alike. He has an AWESOME family, he’s super smart, and he travels the world.

In a singular moment, my biggest accomplishments in life looked like a 5th-grade science project. I wished I had something to offer that sounded brilliant. I was dying for some validation that I was even capable of creating something amazing. I started to become discouraged. He’s got something I haven’t…

And then I stopped to consider that this is the OPPOSITE of an appropriate reaction. It’s more likely that the reason I’m talking with this amazing person is to get the message that I can do it, too! Duh!

So, I started thinking – what if I tried listening to this marvelous friend as a peer- not an underling. If I started noticing – Do I say the same kinds of things that he says? Do I have the same poise? The same confidence? The same kindness?

I may not be able to replicate his results tomorrow, but I can certainly take tips on how he is being and acting right now.

It reminds me of the quote in the uber-suspenseful survival movie with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin – “The Edge”. Hopkins is a VERY wealthy man in a big mess with a grizzly bear and he is freaking out. He keeps repeating to himself, “If one man can do it, so can another.” And he gets himself out! No wonder he’s so wealthy. What a great life philosophy.

So, imagine that you’re the only one counting you out! Get in!

Successful people are proof that it’s possible. Period. Now, go prove me right. Find someone successful and be like them!

Write down two or three of your goals….I’ll wait…do it now.

Now, look…would THOSE be the goals that …..say..Oprah would write? Donald Trump would write? Super model Natasha Poly would write? Angelina Jolie would write?

Remember, people want to be proud of their decisions!

This is an especially important message for people who sell products/services that require a lengthy contracting/procurement process.

Once your contact has said “yes” – YOUR JOB BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT.

This could apply to a person buying a fleet of construction vehicles from you all the way to a Mary Kay consultant booking a party with a hostess for two weeks in the future.

Here’s why your job becomes SO important.

Now, YOUR BUYER’S reputation and personal “brand” is on the line  –  which makes them VERY NERVOUS. In between the “yes” and the completed event (purchase, party, etc), they need to keep remembering that they made a great decision.

Throughout the entire process you want your buyer to feel GREAT about their decision.

Here are some tried and true ideas. Set up weekly calls with your buyer to give them tools that they can put in place NOW to help them hit the ground running when the contract is finally signed – or the event is happening.

Send CELEBRATION emails of victories that other clients are having by using your products/services. Send PR News Releases about your own company that put you in a positive light.

Direct your buyer to resources on your website that they will find interesting –  possibly a blog post. Talk to them about the keynote speech that your CMO delivered at the latest conference.

Find ways to keep congratulating your buyer on making a great decision and you will have a happy ongoing relationship – fruitful with referrals, upsells, and trust.
